Solmaid Community School is a project initiated by a group of local Bangladeshi teachers with the support of five experienced international expatriate teachers from the International School of Dhaka. This is a low cost private school run by Bangladeshi teachers of the Solmaid community for the marginalized children of Bangladesh, often referred to as ‘street children’.
Mahatma Ghandi (1931) described this model of education provision as, ‘the beautiful tree’. It is this philosophy of community education whereby the community accepts responsibility for educating itself, which has inspired this project.
After conducting a feasibility study, it was calculated that the school’s annual operating costs would be approximately US$25,000. The current aim is to raise funds to meet these costs through sponsorship both international and local. Solmaid Community School welcomed its first students in January 2013.
